Class 3 vs 3A in Singapore — Manual, Automatic, and What Changes
The practical difference between Singapore Class 3 and Class 3A licences — what you may drive, the same BTT/FTT theory path, and how to choose before you enrol.
Most car learners in Singapore pick a class before they enrol: Class 3 (manual) or Class 3A (automatic). The theory path is the same. The practical car, the test, and what you may drive afterwards are not.
Choose the class for the cars you actually need to drive — not for which theory paper looks easier. There is no separate "automatic theory test".

Traffic Police and your driving centre are authoritative for the exact vehicle categories each class covers. Treat the table as the learner's decision, not a legal substitute.
Theory does not split by 3 vs 3A
You sit the same Basic Theory Test and the same Final Theory Test whether you enrol Class 3 or Class 3A.

Questions about gear changes, stalling, or "manual vs automatic" can still appear as safe-driving or vehicle-control items. They do not mean 3A learners skip FTT.
What actually changes
Lessons and the practical test. Class 3 is taught and tested in a manual car. Class 3A is taught and tested in an automatic. Centres price and schedule the two streams separately — compare BBDC, CDC, and SSDC on their own portals, not on a single internet rumour.
What you may drive later. A Class 3 pass is the more flexible car licence for mixed household cars. A Class 3A pass is enough if you will only drive automatics. If you later need a manual, you typically add practical training and a further practical test — you do not re-sit BTT for that upgrade. Confirm the current conversion steps with your centre and Traffic Police.
PDL and booking. You still apply for a Provisional Driving Licence after BTT. Display and supervision rules for learners apply on both streams.
How to choose before you enrol
Pick Class 3A if you expect to drive automatics only, want the simpler clutch-free practical, or the household cars you will borrow are automatic. Many learners do this for cost and pass-rate reasons. Check current centre figures rather than assuming 3A is always faster.
Pick Class 3 if you need to drive a manual — family car, older vehicle, or work. Learning manual first avoids a second practical later. It is a harder skill in traffic; budget more lesson hours.
Do not pick a class to dodge theory. FTT is the same gate. If theory is the scary part, that is a practice problem, not a 3 vs 3A problem.
Private vs school enrolment still uses the same centres for theory administration. The class you choose should match the instructor's cars and the test vehicle the centre will put you in.

Exam traps on the theory papers
Theory questions like contrasting:
- Learner / PDL obligations vs qualified driver rules
- What a licence class allows you to drive — read "manual", "automatic", and "class" carefully
- Demerit points for new drivers after you pass the practical
When a question says "Class 3" or "automatic transmission", it is usually testing the restriction, not inviting you to argue about which course is nicer.
