BTT vs FTT vs RTT — Which Singapore Theory Test Do You Need?
Clear differences between Singapore's Basic, Final, and Riding Theory Tests — who sits each one, when to book, and how the results are used.
Singapore learners often search "BTT vs FTT" the week they enrol — and then discover RTT exists if they are aiming for a motorcycle licence. The three tests cover overlapping road knowledge, but they sit at different points in the licensing path.

If you only remember one thing: everyone starts with BTT. FTT and RTT are the next theory checkpoints for car and motorcycle streams.
BTT — the shared foundation
The Basic Theory Test checks core road rules, signs, and safe-driving knowledge. Traffic Police states that a valid BTT pass is required for Class 3 and Class 2B Provisional Driving Licence applications.
You can book BTT upon enrolment. Passing it unlocks the PDL application; it does not by itself qualify you for the practical driving or riding test.

FTT — the car practical gateway
The Final Theory Test is the theory checkpoint for learners heading toward a Class 3 or 3A practical driving test. Centres typically only let you book FTT after you have passed BTT.
FTT goes deeper on judgement, expressway behaviour, and situations you meet closer to the practical test. A common planning rule of thumb is that FTT validity is treated as about two years for practical-test progression — so avoid passing FTT and then waiting forever to book the practical.

RTT — the motorcycle theory checkpoint
Class 2B learners take the Riding Theory Test as part of the motorcycle training path, after clearing BTT. RTT focuses on riding-specific hazards, positioning, and motorcycle road rules on top of the shared basics.
If you are only comparing car tests, you can ignore RTT. If you are switching from car to bike later, check with your centre which results still apply — do not assume an old FTT replaces RTT.

Same format, different focus
Centres commonly describe all three theory tests with the same exam shell — 50 questions, 50 minutes, pass mark 45. The question banks differ. That is why drilling the wrong category feels "easy" in practice and still fails on the real paper.
Use category-specific practice, then finish with timed simulations in the test you will actually sit.
Fees
Theory test fees were revised in March 2026, with further rises scheduled. Current figures are in Singapore driving test fees through 2028.
