Identification by an officer out of uniform

When a police officer acts against a person under the Road Traffic Act while not in uniform, the officer must, if asked, declare their office and produce the identification card that the Commissioner of Police may direct police officers to carry (Singapore Statutes Online, Road Traffic Act 1961, s. 128(1)).

When a person may refuse

The Act says it is not an offence for a person to refuse a request, demand or order made by a police officer who is not in uniform and fails to declare their office and produce their identification card when asked (Singapore Statutes Online, Road Traffic Act 1961, s. 128(2)). This section concerns an officer acting under the Road Traffic Act; it does not describe other police powers or requirements under other laws.

Coverage debt

  • Section 128 does not describe the card's appearance or the Commissioner of Police's directions about which identification card police officers carry. This article does not infer those details.
