Sharing the road with autonomous vehicles on trial
Identifying an AV on trial
LTA says a blinking yellow beacon indicates that an autonomous vehicle (AV) is operating in autonomous mode. An “AV on trial” sticker indicates that the vehicle is on a road trial (LTA, Autonomous Vehicles).
SPF’s Basic Theory of Driving handbook says AVs approved by LTA for public-road trials have permits and decals for identification (SPF, Basic Theory of Driving handbook, para. 233).
Driving near one
The SPF handbook advises drivers who notice an AV being tested to drive safely as usual. Do not tailgate: maintain a safe following distance, keep a steady speed, and avoid unnecessary acceleration or braking. Overtake only when necessary and safe, leave a safe gap, and return to the lane only when safe without cutting in sharply (SPF, Basic Theory of Driving handbook, para. 236).
Autonomous shuttles in Punggol
Local operators have run fixed-route autonomous shuttles in Punggol since September 2025, and rides have been open to the public since April 2026. LTA describes three routes; the shuttles have bright purple livery and a safety operator remains onboard, ready to take control if needed (MOT, Automated & Autonomous Vehicles; LTA, Fact or Fiction: Autonomous Vehicles).
LTA safety checks and onboard operators
LTA says AVs must undergo safety assessments at the CETRAN AV Test Centre before deployment on public roads. AV operation also requires comprehensive insurance covering third-party liability and property damage, and a blackbox data recorder for vehicle telematics (LTA, Autonomous Vehicles).
LTA distinguishes Developmental AV Solutions from Deployable AV Solutions. A Developmental AV must have an onboard AV operator throughout deployment. A Deployable AV solution may become eligible for driverless deployment only after completing LTA’s assessment stages, including on-road deployment-readiness assessment on its approved route; an AV operator remains onboard during that readiness assessment (LTA, Autonomous Vehicles).
Coverage debt
This guide records the current public fixed-route shuttle service in Punggol but does not map street-level routes and stops or provide live operator schedules. Those details can change; check current LTA and operator information before travelling.
