Warning, informative, and directional traffic signs

Warning signs “warn of possible danger or unusual conditions ahead. Take extra care and slow down when you approach these signs.” Informative signs “provide useful information to motorists.” Directional signs “help you find the way and the correct exit” and help position you in the correct lane (OneMotoring, Driving Rules and Information).

Warning signs (captions)

OneMotoring’s warning family includes (OneMotoring, Driving Rules and Information):

  • Right / left / series of bends ahead: slow down and keep left; do not overtake, make a U-turn or park.
  • Cross junction / T-junction / side road / traffic merging / staggered junction ahead: slow down; beware of traffic from the stated directions; at a T-junction, give way to traffic from the right and left.
  • Two-way traffic ahead / two-way traffic across a one-way carriageway / dual-carriageway ends: slow down; keep left where stated; beware of oncoming or crossing traffic.
  • Road narrows (one side or both) / lanes merging / steep up or down slope: slow down; do not overtake; on slopes, keep left, change to a lower gear, and do not U-turn or park.
  • Roundabout ahead: slow down and stop if necessary; give way to traffic on the right.
  • Light signals ahead: slow down; beware of traffic lights changing.
  • Pedestrian crossing ahead / raised zebra crossing ahead / children zone / elderly or handicapped pedestrians zone: slow down; stop for pedestrians where stated.
  • Electronic Road Pricing Zone ahead: pay a fee when entering during restricted hours.
  • Expressway ahead / tunnel ahead: certain types of vehicles are not allowed.
  • Vehicle breakdown sign: these signs should be placed at least 20 metres behind the broken-down vehicle.
  • Accident area / road works / slippery road / uneven road / road hump ahead: slow down and drive carefully; keep left and do not overtake where the caption says so.
  • Gated / ungated level crossing; animals roaming; road leading to quay, river bank or sea; low flying aircraft; U-turn ahead (including from the opposite direction); curve markers; sharp bend.

Informative signs (captions)

  • For buses only; for taxis only; parking space; parking for lorries only.
  • Waiting lanes ahead: you can wait in any of the waiting lanes; stop for pedestrians crossing.
  • Turning lanes ahead: signal and change to the correct lane.
  • Start of expressway: follow the expressway rules. End of expressway: slow down and follow the speed limit.
  • Red light camera at intersection: stop when the signal changes to amber.
  • Bus stop: no parking or stopping 9 metres ahead of or behind the bus bay.
  • Bus lane with normal hours / full-day hours: only buses allowed.
  • Keep to the left: right lanes are for overtaking only.
  • Traffic signals not in operation during the stated hours.

Directional and EMAS signs

Advance and confirmation directional signs use white text and arrows on a green background. Roads leading to an expressway are boxed within a blue background. Additional road-information signs use black text on white (OneMotoring, Driving Rules and Information).
