Warning, informative, and directional traffic signs

OneMotoring tells drivers to pay attention to and obey warning signs, informative signs, directional signs, and EMAS signs (OneMotoring, Driving Rules and Information).

Warning signs “warn of possible danger or unusual conditions ahead. Take extra care and slow down when you approach these signs.” Informative signs “provide useful information to motorists.” Directional signs “help you find the way and the correct exit” and help position you in the correct lane (OneMotoring, Driving Rules and Information).

This article records those official captions. It does not invent extra duties.

The current Road Traffic (Traffic Signs) Rules divide scheduled signs into regulatory, warning, and informative signs. Regulatory signs inform road users of special obligations, restrictions, and prohibitions they must comply with; warning signs alert road users to danger and its nature and source; informative signs provide information useful during travel. The Rules prescribe the minimum size, colour, type, and description of authorised signs through the Schedule; dimensions shown in its diagrams are in millimetres unless stated otherwise. A slight difference in size, colour, or type does not by itself make a sign irregular or unlawful if it does not mislead, materially change the sign’s general appearance, or impair its effectiveness (Singapore Statutes Online, Road Traffic (Traffic Signs) Rules, rr. 2–3).

Warning signs (captions)

OneMotoring’s warning family includes (OneMotoring, Driving Rules and Information):

• Right / left / series of bends ahead: slow down and keep left; do not overtake, make a U-turn or park.
• Cross junction / T-junction / side road / traffic merging / staggered junction ahead: slow down; beware of approaching or joining traffic as captioned. The T-junction caption says to give way to traffic from the right and left; the traffic-merging caption warns of traffic joining from the left.
• Two-way traffic ahead / two-way traffic across a one-way carriageway / dual-carriageway ends: slow down; keep left where stated; beware of oncoming or crossing traffic.
• Road narrows on one or both sides: slow down; do not overtake, make a U-turn or park.
• Lanes merging: slow down and beware of merging traffic.
• Steep upward or downward slope: keep left, change to a lower gear, and do not overtake, make a U-turn or park.
• Roundabout ahead: slow down and stop if necessary; give way to traffic on the right.
• Light signals ahead: slow down; beware of traffic lights changing.
• Pedestrian crossing ahead / raised zebra crossing ahead / children zone / elderly or handicapped pedestrians zone: slow down; stop for pedestrians at the crossings where stated, and beware of children or elderly or handicapped pedestrians crossing in the respective zones.
• Electronic Road Pricing Zone ahead: pay a fee when entering during restricted hours.
• Expressway ahead / tunnel ahead: certain types of vehicles are not allowed.
• Vehicle breakdown sign: these signs should be placed at least 20 metres behind the broken-down vehicle.
• Accident area / road works / slippery road / uneven road / road hump ahead: slow down and drive carefully; keep left and do not overtake where the caption says so.
• Gated / ungated level crossing; animals roaming; road leading to quay, river bank or sea; low flying aircraft; U-turn ahead (including from the opposite direction); curve markers; sharp bend.

ERP 2 transition cues

LTA says the new ERP 2 visual cues are intended to complement On-Board Unit (OBU) notifications. Its 28 September 2026 announcement describes two oval blue “ERP” symbols in each lane on arterial and slip roads, three on each expressway lane, and an “ERP Charge Zone” sign at the start of each charging location. LTA said installation would begin progressively from October 2026 at the 33 existing operational ERP locations, with work expected to finish before the 1 January 2027 transition. Informative signs (captions)

Selected captions on the same page (OneMotoring, Driving Rules and Information):

• For buses only; for taxis only; parking space; parking for lorries only.
• Waiting lanes ahead: you can wait in any of the waiting lanes; stop for pedestrians crossing.
• Turning lanes ahead: signal and change to the correct lane.
• Start of expressway: follow the expressway rules. End of expressway: slow down and follow the speed limit.
• Red light camera at intersection: stop when the signal changes to amber.
• Bus stop: no parking or stopping 9 metres ahead of or behind the bus bay.
• Bus lane with normal / full-day operating hours: the sign caption says “Only buses allowed”. LTA separately states that during bus-lane operating hours use is illegal for other vehicles, except bicycles in single file, emergency-service and police vehicles on urgent duty call, and non-scheduled or public buses (with non-scheduled buses barred from stopping to pick up or drop off passengers along the bus lane). A dotted bus lane may be used when turning.
• Keep to the left: right lanes are for overtaking only. A separate Slow down sign caption says to keep within the speed limit; it does not publish a different numerical limit (OneMotoring, Driving Rules and Information).
• Traffic signals not in operation during the stated hours.
• Speed regulating strips ahead: slow down.
• Give way to the visually handicapped crossing the road; slow down and stop your vehicle.
• Rain shelter for motorcyclists.
• No-through road on the right; no-through road straight ahead.
• Tow Away Zone; Wheel Clamped Zone.
• Parking Guidance System: provides real-time information about available parking spaces. A speed detector lets motorists check their speed and slow down to stay within the speed limit. Travel Time Displays at expressway entrances give estimated travel times to selected exits; Traffic Information Displays on expressways and major arterial roads inform motorists about traffic conditions ahead.
• Cycle track: cyclists must stay on cycle track.
• “Slow down” signs: one caption says to keep within the speed limit. One-way traffic: you can turn right or left; a separate sign marks the start of a one-way street. The left-turn lane caption says the left lane must turn left, while the shared lane on the right can turn left or go straight. Another sign warns of a U-turn ahead for vehicles below the stated weight limit.
• Electronic acronyms: AFT After; BEF Before; LN Lane; SH Shoulder; VEH Vehicle.

Directional and EMAS signs

Advance and confirmation directional signs use white text and arrows on a green background. Roads leading to an expressway are boxed within a blue background. Additional road-information signs use black text on white (OneMotoring, Driving Rules and Information).

EMAS and related electronic messages on that page include road works, single lane, detour, congestion, accident or breakdown on the expressway, lane obstruction, give way to ambulance or fire engine, events on the road, road/exit/left-turn closure, and tunnel lane-status signals: green arrow open lane; red cross closed lane; amber cross possible obstruction ahead. The captions tell drivers to slow down for road works, congestion, incidents and obstructions; for an obstruction, get ready to change lanes if necessary; for an expressway accident or breakdown, watch for stationary vehicles and motorists outside vehicles; and do not exceed a speed limit displayed on an electronic sign (OneMotoring, Driving Rules and Information).
