Moving off, mirrors, and signals
Highway Code guidance on checking before moving off, monitoring mirrors, signalling changes, and cancelling indicators promptly.

Before moving off, look around even if you have checked the mirrors, give the proper signal, move only when it is safe and does not inconvenience others, and give way to passing and overtaking vehicles (SSO, Highway Code r 46).
While driving, the Code says to check the mirror every 5 to 10 seconds to watch traffic behind. Before changing direction, overtaking, or stopping, look in the mirror, make sure it is safe, and give a clear signal (SSO, Highway Code rr 87–88).
Give the correct signal in good time whenever you intend to turn, stop, or slow down. Keep it on long enough for others to anticipate the movement, verify that the indicator communicates the intended direction, and cancel it immediately after use (SSO, Highway Code rr 89–90).
