Reversing safely under the Highway Code

The Highway Code's reversing guidance for checking the area behind, avoiding danger, and keeping a reverse manoeuvre necessary and short.

Before reversing, make sure the manoeuvre can be completed safely. The Highway Code's reversing provisions require drivers to keep a proper lookout and avoid creating danger or inconvenience to other road users (SSO, Highway Code rr 84–86).

Reverse only when it is necessary and only for as long as necessary. Check the space behind the vehicle directly, not only through mirrors; pedestrians, children, cyclists, and other road users can be hidden from view (SSO, Highway Code rr 84–86). Stop the manoeuvre if the view is not adequate or another road user enters the path.
