You must drive with your headlights on at night, between 7.00 p.m. and 7.00 a.m. the following day (SSO, Highway Code r 95). The official handbook uses the same hours (SPF, Basic Theory of Driving).

Use dipped headlights at night in built-up areas where the street lighting is poor, or during rainy weather (SSO, Highway Code r 96). The handbook says: use dipped headlights at night in built-up areas and during rainy weather (SPF, Basic Theory of Driving).

On unlit or dimly lit roads always use your headlights. When meeting other vehicles and cyclists, dip your headlights. If you are dazzled by the lights of another vehicle, slow down and stop if necessary (SSO, Highway Code r 97).

When driving behind another vehicle, dip your headlights (SSO, Highway Code r 98).

In daytime whenever visibility is poor or if it is raining, switch on your lights so other road users can see you (SSO, Highway Code r 99).

It is advisable when parking in unlit or poorly lit roads at night to leave your side or parking lights on (SSO, Highway Code r 100).

The handbook adds: at night always drive well within the limits of your headlights, and beware of pedestrians standing on the central divider because it is difficult to see them when dazzled by oncoming lights (SPF, Basic Theory of Driving).

OneMotoring’s public-street-lighting note advises motorists to switch on vehicle headlights during inclement weather to enhance visibility (OneMotoring, Road Safety). Expressway and tunnel pages that require headlights are in expressway-and-tunnel-rules.
