Expressway speed limits in the statutory schedules

The current Road Traffic (Restriction of Speed on Roads) Notification says that a motor vehicle's speed must not exceed the limit specified for a road or part of a road in its First to Sixth Schedules. Where no scheduled road limit applies, the general limit is 50 km/h (Singapore Statutes Online, Restriction of Speed on Roads Notification, rule 2).

The schedules can apply to only a named part and direction of an expressway. For example, the current Fifth Schedule lists 80 km/h sections of the Ayer Rajah Expressway and Central Expressway tunnel by their kilometre posts and lamp-post references (Singapore Statutes Online, Fifth Schedule). The Fourth Schedule lists 70 km/h roads and road sections, including named expressway sections (Singapore Statutes Online, Fourth Schedule).

The notification also sets special limits for school zones when the prescribed school-zone sign is used. A driver should therefore follow the applicable posted sign and not assume that every part of an expressway has the same statutory schedule limit (Singapore Statutes Online, Restriction of Speed on Roads Notification).
